Look Out Below

GamesIndustry.biz has this tidbit from Sony:
The PlayStation 3 will no longer act as a home network router, according to Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi, who has revealed that the functionality has been dropped because it would have been too expensive. Kutaragi also revealed that a monkey will fly to the moon in a rocketship controlled entirely by the Cell processor.

Okay, I added that last line.

Here we go. The Sony hype machine starts to meet reality. There will be more of these announcements in the next few months. I’m pretty sure that “aging” recorded SD material into HD is going to be dropped, because, well, it’s essentially impossible. Oh, and the whole idea of connecting multiple units and drawing processing power from the unused ones via network will fall by the wayside as well.

Sony needs to hit $299 at launch. They’re going to be throwing all kinds of functionality overboard. In spite of their protests, here’s what they can really afford to ship for $299: a game machine. Man, are they going to be pissed when they figure that out.

Microsoft’s hype is also annoying, but it’s somehow not on the same breathtakingly crappy scale as Sony’s.
