From one elderly woman to another, in Borders, whispering in richly conspiratorial tones:
"Do you know how he died? He fell down the stairs."
From one of Eli's best friends (a girl), who told her dad last year after three weeks of first grade that she had a boyfriend. When her father expressed surprise, she said, with patient exasperation, "It's not like he's the first one, Dad."
From Eli 7.7, upon walking past a female mannequin that was attired in particularly obnoxious clothing: "Lady, that is NOT a good look on you."
