Science Links and One Amazing Toy

They found a new relative of the crocodile, and it was a bad-ass:
The 13-foot long beast, Dakosaurus andiniensis, had a massive 18-inch-long jaw with interlocking 4-inch teeth. It is a long-lost relative of the crocodile yet it had fins.

Fossils only--not something you'll be feeding next year at Sea World--but still very cool. Here's the link:

Also, in Kansas they just found a 1,400 pound meteorite.
GREENSBURG, Kan. - In an area of southwest Kansas long known for its meteorite finds, Steve Arnold came up with what may be the biggest of its kind ever found in the United States.

Arnold, a professional meteorite hunter from Kingston, Ark., found the 1,400-pound space rock two weeks ago in Kiowa County's Brenham Township. Using a metal detector mounted on a three-wheel vehicle, he discovered it more than 7 feet underground and dug it up.

He also found eighty-four cents in change.

Here's more:
The meteorite Arnold discovered is classified as an oriented pallasite, so it has a conical shape and has olivine crystals embedded in iron-nickel alloy. Only two larger ones of that type are known to have been found: a 3,100-pounder in Australia and a 1,500-pounder in Argentina.

Very interesting, and here's the link:

Then there's one "toy" science link. DQ reader Wallace Wheaton sent me the most amazing link to a toy he had as a child.

That's right--the atomic cannon TOY. They actually built a toy version of an atomic weapon. Let me just say this: the 50's were some whacked out shit. I'm surprised they didn't have bundt pans that made cakes in the shape of mushroom clouds. Anyway, the picture is a hoot and here's the link:
