Guitar Hero Trainer: VGSPlayer

I mentioned a program called Guitar Hero Trainer: VGSPlayer a few weeks ago. It's a trainer for Guitar Hero that lets you use the game disc in a computer drive, and you can play along without failing songs as well as speeding up or slowing the notes. There are also hammer on/pull off note fingering suggestions for each song which will highlight where each should be used.

Now he's released version 1.3b, and you can use your guitar controller as well (if you have the PS2/USB converter). The game registers fret button presses by putting a highlighted ring around the border of the note, and if it's timed correctly, the song plays. This version supports timing detection for single notes only, but hopefully it will lead to full support for all note types and play techniques in the future, as well as scoring.

In other words, it's becoming the fully-featured practice mode we all wished that Guitar Hero had included. And the information page (which features better documentation than many game manuals) also includes some very solid tips about playing technique as well.

It's a terrific program, and it's written by a fellow named Dan Gendreau. I originally downloaded the program back when it was version 1.1, and I had some problems getting it to work. Dan kept troubleshooting with me over a period of about a week until I could use the program, even putting out test versions of the program to see if they fixed the problem. So the guy is both incredibly bright and incredibly nice as well.

If you're still struggling with a few songs in the game ($*%**$# Cowboys From Hell), or just want to improve your playing (this has really helped me with hammer ons/pull offs), here's a link: VGSPlayer 1.3b.
