Gaming Notes

Renowned historian Niall Ferguson, much to my surprise, is quite interested in war games. Francis Cermak e-mailed me about this and I started poking around. Here's a fascinating article in the NY Times magazine about Ferguson's experience playing war games (he highly recommends Making History: The Calm and the Storm, by the way).

If you haven't seen the official Fallout 3 trailer, it's here. I've said it before, but I think Bethesda is the best possible choice as developers for this game.

N'Gai Croal has an interesting bit of Wii alarm from Tyler Bleszinski (Cliff's brother). It fascinates me that so many people feel so entirely threatened by the Wii, and I'm going to write about that at some point. Read Bleszinski here.

2KSports has released the official trailer for All-Pro Football 2K8, and it's here. Also, there's a video on recruiting for NCAA 08, which you can see here (it's called NCAA Football 08 'Recruiting' HD).

If you ever wanted to see how Hitler responds to the banhammer, go here (thanks Mitch). I burst out laughing at least half a dozen times, and I think we can officially expect this same clip to get re-subtitled at least fifty times in the next decade. Which is good news, as far as I'm concerned.

Kevin Gaughan sent me a link to this story:
The Church of England accused Sony Corp. on Saturday of using an English cathedral as the backdrop to a violent computer game and said it should be withdrawn from shop shelves.

The church said Sony did not ask for permission to use Manchester cathedral and demanded an apology.

The popular new PlayStation 3 game, "Resistance: Fall of Man," shows a virtual shootout between rival gunmen with hundreds of people killed inside the cathedral. Church officials described Sony's alleged use of the building as "sick" and sacrilegious.

What baffles me about this is why the Church of England didn't bring up this issue in November, when the game shipped. If they hadn't kept Crackdown for four months, or maybe upgraded their rental plan, maybe they would have gotten it from their Gamefly queue before now.

Matthew Sakey's always-interesting Culture Clash column for Gamasutra has a new installment, and it's a doozy. He writes about a publisher trying to bribe and/or threaten him into changing a review score. Great stuff ("very large fonts" is a comedy classic), and you can read it here.

If you missed it, the Overlord demo is out for the 360 (the PC demo should follow shortly). The basic premise is that you're evil, and you have minions to command.

Seriously, who wouldn't like that?

The demo shows off the game's sense of style, which is considerable, and it's also very funny. Gameplay seemed thin, at least in the demo, but the demo only encompassed a few missions. I think there's plenty of potential for enjoyment here, and with the game being released near the end of this month, it's coming out at the perfect time--we're all looking for something to play right now.
