School's Out For Summer

Walt Kass sent me this e-mail on Friday:
Tell Eli that leaving school for summer break is the greatest. I am 67 and still remember the feeling like it was yesterday.

I didn't realize this until Walt reminded me, but I remember it, too. We lived across the street from the elementary school, and when the bell rang for the last time, I always sprinted from the classroom to my front yard. I'm not sure I ever ran faster, and I know it never felt that good.

Yesterday, it was Eli's first time to have that feeling, and his exuberance reminded me that the last day of school was always a perfect day, because there was never a day when I feel more free.
