It's hard to imagine a time when this was possible (from a book I'm reading):Her father was a prospector, Will Ryan, burn in 1866 in Connecticut. His fortune always seemed one step ahead of him. He had worked on a whaling ship, been a surveyor, and spent much of his life prospecting for gold.
